Would an HP Pavilion dv6500 work as a gaming laptop?

The specs are on this site: http://www.laptopmax.com/HP/reviews/36/HP_Pavilion_DV6500_reviews.html I'm sort of new to PC gaming. Would this laptop be able to run computer games like Counter-Strike, Portal, Oblivion or Guild Wars? Thanks.

  1. Um... I don't think so. It's memory is quite low to run that kind of games. Also, windows Vista isn't a great windows to run games. Install Windows 7.

  2. No, the computer wouldnt run very stable with the specs. I wil list the problems below:

    1. Not enough RAM/Memory

    2. Hard drive size is kind of small, so your computer would crowd over time. You would want to keep your hard drive about maximum 2/3 full

    3. A 1.7gHz processor (dual core) is really slow for those kind of games, you would want something around 2.5gHz for a dual core, and a 2.0gHz for a quad core.

    4. There also seems to be no high quality graphics card such as a nVidia or and ATI Radeon card installed. You would want a video card with around 512mb to 2gb of memory on your video card.

  3. The short answer is no, it will run some older games choppy and low res, and would completely choke on others.

This laptop is sorely outdated and very underpowered by 4 years ago standards, and the graphics card is an old on board "shared" memory graphics card, which isn't optimized for games.

This is at best a laptop for playing puzzles and surfing the web.

You can either buy a complete Desktop PC if you don't care about mobility and just want a good machine for playing games, and that should be in your price range. But, if you insist on a laptop for gaming; you are going to have to spend more than that!
