My first laptop: Help finding the right notebook for me by Christmas...?

o, the holiday season is quickly approaching, and I'm in the market for a notebook that suits me. Unfortunately, cant decide for myself, not to mention Im dumb when it comes to the current technology now, so I'm gonna need some help . Also, Ive never owned a laptop so yeahhhh :\ ========== General Questions 1) What is your budget? $1600-$1800 2) What size notebook would you prefer? 15" - 17" 3) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in. USA <3 4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? Ive read some about ASUS and Im liking what I am hearing but I am open to any brand as long as it's good. I just want this notebook to last me for the next 2.5 years 5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? Basic tasks, college work, IMing, and some gaming hopefully 6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? I just plan on carrying it around the house at most.. 7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? I'd like this notebook to be able to handle the Half Life Orange Box (love me some team fortress) and Starcraft 2 in the future. Those are about the only two games I see myself playing in the foreseeable future 8) How many hours of battery life do you need? Ive never owned a laptop, so honestly I dont know what is good 9) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? Online 10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc. Windows Vista I guess Screen Specifics 11) Would you prefer standard or widescreen? ummm, whatever looks pretty 12) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer? Standard a. XGA -1024x768 - Large and easy to read text + graphics icons, but you fit less stuff on the screen. b. SXGA - 1400x1050 - Compromise resolution between XGA and UXGA. c. UXGA - 1600x1200 - Very small text and graphics icons, you can fit lots of stuff on the screen. Widescreen d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets. e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets. f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets. The one that's good 13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Come again? Build Quality and Design 14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? Not especially, I dont mind showing off something that's ugly ;o 15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last? Within the next month Notebook Components 16) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 200GB? atleast 120 GBs 17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive?   1. You have a pretty good budget to work with. I've seen ads on the new ASUS notebooks, and they look really nice but I don't know much else about them.

    I'd recommend checking out a Macbook -- Macs used to be very pricy but they have become a lot more affordable lately, and they still look as nice and easy to use as always. The only thing is that you won't get a 15-17" screen in your range (you'd have to move up to the Macbook Pro which is more money). If you have an apple store near you, go over and give it a spin.
