Build Your Own Gaming Notebook

Which is the better notebook - the new Dell Studio XPS 16 or the HP HDX 18t?

I am looking for a Windows OS desktop replacement notebook, with a lot of multimedia power, great build quality, and good reliability, all for under $2000. I don't need it to be portable, although I would like to move around with it if necessary. I have researched extensively, and the two best notebooks I have found at this price range are the Dell XPS 16 and HP HDX 18t. I know that the Dell has some heat issues, although because I don't do any gaming, this shouldn't be a problem, especially with a cooling pad. The HP is massive - maybe too massive - and I have questions about the quality of HP (I have only ever owned Dell notebooks) as well as the really cheap looking chrome look. Does anyone have suggestions? I would also really like to hear from you if you own one of these notebooks, and have some idea of their quality, performance, etc.. Thanks. (Also - please no answers from Mac enthusiasts. Although I respect your opinions, I am not in the market for a Mac.)

  2. yeah, you need to get a dell, an hp is too big and can sometimes be too complicated.and do not get a mac because i don't think thats a good computer for anyone.

  3. I can't speak to the HP but I have the Dell Studio XPS 16 and love it.

Yes, it can run hot and it is like a gallery for fingerprints but outside of that it is great. I use a cheap cooling pad and it brings the heat down fine. You will absolutely love the screen at the 1920x1080, it is gorgeous. You will not find a better LED screen on a laptop.

I'm running with 8 GB of ram on Vista Home Premium and all the Adobe stuff files (Photoshop, Premier, Soundbooth). Call of Duty 4 even runs smoothly so any video or photo editing is a breeze. In fact you could run all of them at the same time and iTunes, and a few browsers and whatever else and it could handle it. (seriously, I'll take a break from working, leave all my Adobe stuff open and launch into a quick game of COD4). Never had a crash.

The battery life is lame (about 2 hours) but you don't sound like you'll be moving around much.

Leo Laporte has a Dell Studio XPS 16 and loves it.
