Would it be cheaper to build a laptop from scratch or to simply buy it from a retailer?
I need a gaming laptop, one that will be good for at least say another year or so, playing games on at least medium.. Right now I'm looking at this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/654516-REG/Gateway_LX_WEJ02_003_P_7908u_FX_Edition_Notebook.html Would it just be cheaper to build one of a similar caliber? Oh, and the budget is around $1000, give or take a hundred.

- I've never heard of anyone building a laptop, but I guess that it is possible. Just do whatever is best for you.
- buy one
- dont build a laptop. You are better off buying one. You get a warranty and don't have to worry about finding parts which can be difficult.
- It's always cheaper to buy one, either desktop or laptop. In the late 90's and early 00's it might of been cheaper to build one.
- You are almost always better off buying an "off the shelf" computer from a retailer. You get a warranty, preloaded software, and an operating system for a lot less than you pay if you bought everything individually. Unlike desktop computers, laptops are not standardized when it comes to the internal components. A battery, DVD player, etc that fits one laptop will more than likely not fit any others. Even if you did get all the components necessary to build a laptop, you will most likely spend a lot more that you would have for a retail model. You can walk into any retailer and buy a decent laptop for less than what you mention above.
