Build Your Own Gaming Notebook

plan on building my own PC. how much do you think it will cost?

i plan on having some sort of super gaming PC. here are the specs i want so far: -3.0GHz Dual Core AMD processor -4GB DDR2 RAM -2x 500GB HDD -3x IEEE 1394 ports -6x high speed USB 2.0 ports -2x 17" LCD monitors (2500:1 contrast ratio) -2x DVD/CD burning drives with Light Scribe i haven't decided on what kind of Video Card i want yet. some sort of Nvidia, but idk which. and i also want a really good sound card and wireless card. please give me some suggestion on those So how much do you think it would cost to build all this? I plan on it being a 64bit Window's XP SP3 on one HDD, and Linux Mint 4.0 on the other HDD. this would be of course a Desktop, not a Laptop/Notebook.

  1. Well the hardware isn't too much the most expensive part is the monitor. If you already own the software it should be around $500. But the software will get you if you don't own it.

  2. Simply price it all out on newegg.com, nvidia cards are very good, make sure you get a good power supply for your case too! I like the thermaltake psu's. Here's a good system building tutorial:

  3. Check ebuyer - http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Components?refmen=tn

lol it will be more than $500 as the above comment suggested ^^

  4. You won't be saving $ by DIY. If you total up these parts, you are looking at somewhere around $1000 with the two monitors. That would buy a really nice laptop or desktop.

However, I am a believer on homebrew systems. My main system started off as a Pentium 2 WIndows 98 system. I've upgraded the motherboard/processor several times, as well as adding disks, new OS, graphics cards, etc.

Over the long run, your outlay will be lower and you will always have a modern system.

  5. I'm thinking about $950 for what you have listed.

For a graphics card, I would go with 2 of these and run them in SLi: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150316

    Sound Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102006

    Wireless Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833118002

Windows XP x64 only comes in Professional edition and only goes up to SP2.

  6. IN the region of of $950 to $1800

  7. As far as Video cards. I would go with ATI right now. There new cards feature GDDR5 and are less expensive. The top ATI card is the 4870X2 and it kicks the X280's arse. The 2nd card is the 4870 and that one kicks the 9800GTX's Arse. The 4870 is about $270 right now, i ordered it at newegg.com and it should be getting it today

  8. I wouldn't bother with the AMD, the Core2Duo's / Quads are the only way to go at the moment.

At that your currently at about £500 / $1000. Adding a top of the range video card will take you to £750 / $1500

The dumb ass saying you won't get it cheaper by DIY is a complete retard, No gaming PC on Earth bought from a retailer will be bought for less than the price of a Small detached house. Your lucky if they throw a dedicated GPU in for you.
